PROBLEM
Multiple baby-leaf and microgreen crops were arriving at harvest with yellowing leaves — a quality failure visible in the tray. Two distinct root causes were tangled together and indistinguishable without zone-level data. Replicating this process in a 4,800 sqm production facility would have meant enormous, recurring waste.
ECOSENSE INTERVENTION
- Maturity analysis revealed that some plants were maturing faster than others within the same tray due to inconsistent seed distribution — older leaves were yellowing from age.
- Health analysis showed plants at the end of the tray weren't receiving adequate nutrients — a separate cause of yellowing, masquerading as the same symptom.
- Recommended improved seed distribution and recalibrated cycle lengths per crop.
RESULTS
- Cycle lengths reduced by an average of 2 days across 5 different crops.
- Two extra cycles per year, per plant type, became available.
- Yellowing from both ageing and nutrient deficiency was eliminated.
- A 12% annual revenue increase — adding up to millions of dollars at production scale.
RELEVANCE TO YOUR VERTICAL FARM
"Yellow leaves" almost never has one cause. Without zone-level health data you fix one driver and watch the symptom persist — convinced the intervention failed. Continuous monitoring separates the threads.
